Frequently Asked Questions about family sessions

What should we wear for family photos?

Neutral tones, earthy colors, and coordinating outfits usually photograph best. I actually recommend not overly matching. It sounds good in theory, but when everyone is standing next to each other it can create large blocks of the same tone and become harder on the eyes visually. Coordinating usually photographs much more naturally than everyone wearing the exact same thing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can grandparents or extended family join?

Absolutely. Extended family sessions are always welcome and can become some of the most meaningful photos to have over the years. Because every extended family group is different in size and needs, these sessions are custom quoted individually.

During extended family sessions, I also make sure to photograph a variety of groupings and combinations throughout the session. That usually includes the full family together, individual family units, grandparents with grandkids, siblings, couples, and other important combinations people may want updated while everyone is together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tips before your session

Please make sure everyone has had a snack before arriving. Waiting until after the session to eat can sometimes create very hungry little humans who are rushing to be done and falling apart halfway through photos.

I also recommend avoiding candy during the session since sugar spikes and crashes can make emotions and energy levels all over the place.

And one random but important tip… avoid eating or drinking anything super colorful right before your session. Red drinks, popsicles, candy, or sports drinks can stain lips and tongues more than people realize in photos.

Frequently Asked Questions about senior sessions

What if my kids don’t sit still?

Honestly… that’s normal. I do not expect children to stand perfectly still the entire session. Some of the best images come from movement, interaction, laughter, and real moments.

Also, I am very aggressively helpful… aka a little bossy when needed, but in the best way possible. Please do not stress yourself out trying to constantly tell your kids to look at me, smile, or cooperate. I know it can feel stressful for parents, and honestly, it can feel stressful for kids too.

It’s usually best not to force situations or let tempers rise during the session. If I need your help with something specific, I will absolutely let you know in the moment. Otherwise, let me work through the chaos a little bit. I promise I’m used to it and I’m here to help.

Frequently Asked Questions about senior sessions

Where do family sessions usually take place?

Honestly, I really love in-home family sessions. Parents often worry their home is not “perfect enough,” but I can usually see things you don’t. Kids also tend to feel more relaxed and comfortable in their own environment, which often leads to more genuine moments and less stress overall.
