What is Meade Made | Small Business Through the Lens?

Meade Made | Small Business Through the Lens is a project I created to slow things down and really see what’s around me.

As a photographer, I spend a lot of time moving fast.

Sessions, edits, deadlines. But this project is different on purpose.

Once a month, I will choose a local Meade County small business and spend time with them. Not just a quick in-and-out session, but time to observe, ask questions, and understand what they’ve built. The space, the people, the story behind it.

Then I document it the way I know how.

With photos that show more than just what it looks like, but what it feels like.

This is not a paid feature.

These businesses receive free branding photos and visual content

they can use for their own marketing. My goal is to support local

businesses, highlight the people behind them, and show our

community what exists right here in Meade County.

Because we have more here than people realize.

Good businesses. Passionate owners. Spaces built with intention.

Meade Made is my way of putting a spotlight on that.

January Business Highlight: Serenity Fitness

This month’s Meade Made | Small Business Through the Lens highlight is

Serenity Fitness, a Meade County small business and proud member of the Meade County Chamber of Commerce, owned and operated by Wendy Spohn.

Before I ever photographed a single detail, I spent time in Wendy’s yoga

classes as a quiet fly on the wall, camera in hand.

I wasn’t an attendee, but I didn’t need to be.

Simply observing her teach and guide others made it immediately

clear how much care and knowledge she brings into every room.

Even from the sidelines, I could feel it.

Walking into Serenity Fitness for the first time, I truly didn’t know what to expect.

I didn’t know what the space would feel like or what the experience would be.

But I felt it right away.

The studio is dark, zen, and incredibly peaceful. Emotional, even, in the best way.

There is a calm that settles over you the moment you step inside.

A Space That Pushes You, Even Behind the Camera

Those darker tones and intimate lighting challenged me

photographically and pushed me creatively, which I loved.

I got to stretch a little. Yes, pun intended.

The space itself is beautiful, but the heart behind it is what makes it special.

The Details That Make It Personal

Wendy’s creativity is everywhere.

She designed her own logo.

She hand paints gift boxes that would honestly make incredible gifts on their own.

She has also created custom journals that are available right in her shop.

Every detail feels thoughtful, personal, and intentional.

She also provides everything you need for her classes right on site.

Blocks, mats, pillows, myofascial release tools, and

yoga balls are all there for you.

Many of those same tools are available for purchase,

which I especially love for athletes or anyone wanting

recovery tools without having to leave Brandenburg.

I’m pretty sure I need one of those squishy myofascial release balls for my own house.

More Than Just a Workout

Beyond yoga and fitness classes, Serenity Fitness offers Reiki,

intuitive readings, and a sound bed experience.

Wendy let me try the sound bed during my visit, and it was incredible. It’s hard to describe other than deeply relaxing and grounding. One of those experiences you really have to feel for yourself.

During the two sessions I photographed, I was unexpectedly

moved to tears three different times.

And I wasn’t even there for myself.

That’s how powerful the energy of her classes is.

Being in that space felt less like attending a workout and more like

sitting in a therapist’s office. Quietly processing.

Letting things surface. Letting things go.

The Heart Behind Serenity Fitness

Wendy is equally kind as she is intelligent, and that depth

comes from lived experience.

She shared with me that one of her greatest sources of strength

is her daughter, who passed away when she was just a few months old.

Out of that loss, Wendy wrote a book about her journey through grief and healing. She generously shared it with me, and reading it left me deeply moved by her honesty, resilience, and strength as a person.

That strength shows up in everything she does.

In the way she teaches.

In the way she listens.

In the way she creates space for others to heal in whatever way they need.

A Space That Matters

This is what makes Serenity Fitness feel so special.

It’s not just a studio. It’s a sanctuary.

A space built with heart, experience, and compassion, guided

by someone who truly embodies the work she offers.

Projects like Meade Made continue to remind me how much we really do have right here in Meade County. Thoughtful businesses. Passionate people. Spaces that matter.

We really do have so much here.
