You could tell right away Mayson had a quiet confidence that just needed a little time to shine.
When we first met up at Otter Creek, he was a little nervous (totally normal, especially when your mom’s watching). But once we started chatting and trying a few different ideas, he began to relax and really lean into everything we were doing.
Mayson and his family recently moved back to the area last year, so it was extra special getting to photograph him here. We talked about his time in FFA and his plans for the future. He wants to go into agricultural law, which I think is the coolest mix of passion and purpose.
I knew right away we had to capture that connection to the land, so I had him pick up a handful of dirt and let it fall through his fingers. Simple, but it said so much about who he is and where he’s headed.
And yes, we made sure to get plenty of photos in his FFA jacket, which was really important to him.
What I loved about this session is that Mayson kept it simple. You don’t have to have a ton of outfit changes or multiple locations to have an amazing session. He showed up in what he was wearing, added his FFA jacket, and that was perfect. We laughed so much, and I’ll tell you, we ended up with tons of photos and so many great moments.

He was just one of those really nice kids with a good head on his shoulders and an old soul about him. His mom even confirmed it and said, “He really is just an old soul.” And you could feel that in the way he carried himself.
The fall colors were absolutely popping that day, and the light was doing all the right things. You could feel how much he loves being outdoors. By the end, he was totally in his element, confident, relaxed, and absolutely killing it.
The best part? A few days later, I posted that dirt toss photo on TikTok without realizing the FFA National Convention was happening. His post went from about 400 views to 24,000 views in under 10 minutes. I had to call his mom and tell her. It was wild.
Mayson, you rocked this session. I can’t wait for round two next time, hopefully with some of those animals you told me about.

It’s always a good day when a session feels effortless... the kind where laughter just happens and every idea works better than the last.
Mayson started out a little quiet, but by the end, he was tossing dirt, rocking his FFA jacket, and fully leaning into every part of the session.
You could see that old-soul calm and confidence shining through.
Otter Creek gave us everything that day .... fall color, soft light, and a peaceful backdrop that just fit him perfectly. It’s proof that you don’t need a dozen outfits or locations to tell a story that feels honest and strong.
